May 122015
Good afternoon
I have recovered from dancing in the dawn on Dartmoor on 1st May and am beginning to settle down to some CamRA stuff!
Morris and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at The Members Weekend and AGM in Nottingham a few weeks ago.  What a lovely place Nottingham is, very clean and the people were so friendly.  It is also amazingly full of brilliant pubs!  You will know from What’s Brewing that there were elections for the National Executive and I can tell you that Colin Valentine was re-elected as Chairman (yippee), plus Nik Antona who is an old friend.  Two new NE members were elected, Ian Hill and Alexander Wright, both of whom we know well, so we were pleased with this result.
You may have taken the time to read the motions for debate in What’s Brewing.  This is the interesting part of the AGM for me (although not for everyone I fear!)  Motions 1,2,3,5,7,9,13,14,15,16,18 and 19 were all carried.  Motions 4 & 17 were amended and carried.  Motions 6, 10, 11, 12 and 20 were defeated.  The discussions were interesting and informative.
I have had news from Clearwater Brewery that The Champ now has a CamRa discount scheme – 30p per pint and 15p per half pint off real ale.  Well worth a visit then!
Our next Branch event is the presentation to our Club Of The Year at The Conservative Club, Bideford on Wednesday 20th May at 7.30.  This is the first time I can recall that the Branch has a Club Of The Year.  I do hope you will be able to join us there to celebrate.
Also on Saturday 30th May at 7.00pm we will be presenting our Branch Brewery Of The Year Award, The Mick Gullick Trophy, to Dave Slocombe at his Open Brewery Night at Holsworthy Ales.  Mark, Branch Social Secretary,  has organised a minibus so do get in touch with him if you are interested in transport. [].  The Brewery Open Nights are always busy and great fun.  Details available on the website.
Last month I drew your attention to the North Devon Beer Festival organised by Tim Webster of Barum Brewery, at The Pannier Market in Barnstaple on 24th and 25th May, noon to 10pm.  If you would like to do a couple of hours on the bar please let me know.  I have had a few volunteers but more would be very welcome.  I need to let Tim know who and when by Thursday so please let me know by tomorrow at the latest.
CamRA North Devon Branch now has it’s own Tasting Panel!  A group attended the training session hosted by Exeter Branch a few weeks ago.  What does this mean?  Well, fundamentally this group are now able to complete tasting cards for Devon brewery beers, which I then collate from all the Devon Branches (in my position as Devon Branches Tasting Panel Chair!) and the results inform the Champion Beer Of Britain selection.  Lets hope that we will see a local beer as Champion!
All the events are now available on this website –  Here you can also view news from the branch, minutes of meetings etc.
Thanks for taking the time to read this rather long email.  I look forward to seeing you at an event soon.
